What Causes Flickering Vehicle Lights

what causes flickering vehicle lights

Sterling McCall Lexus Clear Lake can help you identify what causes flickering vehicle lights.

If you observe your car lights flickering while driving, it’s probably going to be from a dying battery. In the case when it’s not the battery, there are other common trouble areas that may be causing the issue. No matter the cause, you should get the problem diagnosed and fixed as quickly as possible. If your car lights aren’t functioning correctly, you may become a danger to other drivers.
Flickering car lights generally happen in 3 areas:

  • Interior overhead lights
  • Headlights
  • Dashboard lights

Since the battery is the most convenient part to diagnose, this is where most of us will look first. If the battery is on its way out, bring it here so we can diagnose the problem and get the correct battery for your car. While there are cases caused by a failing battery, there are other factors to consider.

Bad bulbs or fuses

Bad bulbs or fuses

If your battery is not the reason for your flickering car lights, it could be a failing light bulb. Failing bulbs are an easy and quick fix and present an opportunity to upgrade to new LED bulbs.
If it is a blown fuse, you might be dealing with a more significant issue than you had originally realized. A fuse dies when there is excess electrical current flowing through it. As an example, if the anti-lock brakes are installed with a 10amp fuse, and the fuse gets over 10amps of electrical current, the fuse will fail. In this example, this could also cause your anti-lock brakes to fail. If there is a fuse that regularly fails, bring it in and we will thoroughly diagnose the bigger, potentially more serious issue.

Alternator

Flickering dash lights may also be signs the alternator is dying. Think of it like this, you start your vehicle with battery power, but to keep your car running, the power comes from your alternator. If you drive an older vehicle with halogen lights, you may see them slowly get dimmer with a failing alternator. For newer cars with LED or HID lights, they may flicker on and off or just stop working altogether.

A failing light switch, whether it’s the interior light dimmer or the headlight switch, also needs to be checked out if you have flickering car lights. In some uncommon situations, replacing a worn switch may solve the flickering light problem, especially in vehicles with excessive mileage or older cars. If your car doesn’t fall into either category, it could be a sign of a more significant problem with the electrical system.
Diagnosing these problems can be overwhelming, so if you’re experiencing any issues with flickering lights on your vehicle, bring it in immediately. Our trained technicians will investigate the problem and give you options for fixing your flickering car lights.
